This week, we began to develop ideas for the structural details and fabrication, as this was a key part of the design criteria. The celebration of structure was also evident in the steel cantilever design of the Storey Bridge, with rigid K-Trusses and heafty span. In keeping with our concept, and to create a relationship with the bridge, we decided to cantilever the structure from the cliff, to give the user's an experience similar to what construction workers went through during the construction of the bridge. Here are some sketches we came up with when trying to resolve the structural elements supporting the Node on the cliff face. We particularly payed attention to the relationship to the bridge, and the techtonic nature of the materials considered.
Sketches - Relationship with the Bridge
Sketches - Structural Integrity
Sketches - Shaping the Node
Sketches - Proposed Materials and Footings
I think the next step from here would involve finding exisiting glazing system designs and adapting them to our situation. The next post will cover some more detailed drawings and systems we could use.
